# How to Print

***Disclaimer**: If you are ever unsure of anything during this process **PLEASE** reach out to someone. We would much rather take the 5 minutes to help with a honest question. Then spend potentially hours fixing a simple mistake.*&#x20;

## Slicer

We use [Lulzbot Cura](https://www.lulzbot.com/cura) for the Taz 6 and Robo3d Printers.&#x20;

We also use [PrusaSlicer](https://www.prusa3d.com/page/prusaslicer_424/) for the Prusa Mini+.&#x20;

There is a computer setup near the 3D printers that is preconfigured with all the software you need to print on our printers running Ubuntu.

## Preparing the Printer

You should always make sure the build plate (print bed) is clean. Even if you do not see any debris, you should always wipe down the build plate. Oils from fingers, dust, and other contaminants can get on the bed, and cause prints to not stick and fail.

Soap and Water is the simplest most effective way to remove any of those contaminants. You can simply put a little bit onto a paper towel and rub the build plate. This isn't a kitchen sink. Use light force to clean the surface and make sure it is dry once done. &#x20;

## Print Using PrusaSlicer

1. load a .STL onto the printer computer
2. Insert a USB Flash Drive into the printer computer
3. Open up PrusaSlicer
4. Configure your job and slice the model
   1. See the [PrusaSlicer Manual](https://help.prusa3d.com/en/article/first-print-with-prusaslicer_1753) for a quick reference
5. Click the export GCode and save it to the USB Flash Drive
   1. *Note: You may have to say it to documents first and then drag it to the USB Flash Drive*
6. Eject the USB Flash Drive from the computer and insert the USB Flash Drive into the printer
   1. The USB Port is located on the right side of the printer  next to the power switch
7. The print should show up automatically on the display and allow you to use the black dial to click print.
8. **IMPORTANT!** Be sure to watch the printer closely when it starts.
   1. Make sure it homes and auto levels without issue
      1. *The Prusa Mini does this in a couple cycles*
   2. Make sure the first few layers are put down without issue
   3. **If there is any issue whatsoever, immediately turn the printer off.**

## Software

We use [Sure Cuts a Lot](http://www.surecutsalot.com/index.php) on the computer near the vinyl cutter to create designs and send them to the cutter.

[Here](http://www.surecutsalot.com/tutorials/tutorials.php) are some tutorials on how to use it.

## Usage Instructions

Remove fabric cover and turn the vinyl cutter on using the power switch located on the side of the machine.

#### Loading Material

Load your vinyl into the machine. The rack on the back of the machine holds your roll of vinyl. There are three clips on the machine itself that hold vinyl in place on the rollers--flip them up to feed your piece of vinyl into the rollers, and flip them down to secure the vinyl.

#### Check the Alignment of the Material

Once your vinyl is in place, check the alignment of your material. Press the "Online" button on the cutter controller. Using the arrow keys, feed the vinyl down to check for traveling. You can watch the ruler on the machine to see if your material is traveling side-to-side. This is very important for long cuts. Adjust as needed.

#### Set Origin Point

Set the blade origin using the left and right arrow keys. Most origins start at the furthest right side of the material. When you have the blade at your starting point, press "Set" on the controller, then press "OK."

#### Set Blade Pressure and Speed

Blade pressure and speed will vary depending on the material you wish to cut. A good starting point for Oracal 651 vinyl is 90g pressure and 25mm/s speed. Adjust pressure and speed using the arrow buttons.

Note that cutter must NOT be in "Online" mode in order to set pressure and speed. Otherwise, the arrow keys just move the vinyl and blade.

#### Test Blade Pressure and Speed

Test the pressure and speed by first selecting "Online" on the controller and then pressing the "Test" button. It will cut a .5" (approx.) square. Peel back the vinyl to see the cut. If it peels off with no resistance, and the blade didn't cut through your backing paper, you should be set to go.

The pressure and speed you use will vary across materials and also depends on how sharp the blade is. It's always best to just test until you get the ideal cut for your project.

After testing the pressure and speed, return your blade to its origin position and press "OK."

#### Using Sure Cuts a Lot

Open Sure Cuts a Lot 5 on the PC next to the laser cutter.

Note:

1. You have to use this PC as it is hardwired to the vinyl cutter.
2. You have to open Sure Cuts a Lot AFTER turning on the vinyl cutter. I don't know why this is, but it just doesn't recognize the vinyl cutter if you turn it on afterwards.

Load your design in using the import function, or design it inside the software. SVG formats work best for cutting. For more information on Sure Cuts a Lot, go to their [website](http://surecutsalot.com/tutorials/tutorials.php). They have tutorials for in-depth learning.

When you are ready to cut, choose "Cutter" at the top of the program window. Most of the settings should already be set. The only setting you may want to change is the cutting mode.

#### Origin Point vs WYSIWYG Cutting Mode

Origin point cutting mode uses the bottom right corner of your image as the starting point. On the preview in the Cutter menu, you'll see your image aligned to the bottom right corner of the cutting mat. The origin you set your vinyl cutter blade at is where that bottom right corner will be.

WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) cutting mode uses the cutting mat workspace in Sure Cuts a Lot as the reference for where to place your design. The origin you set your vinyl cutter blade at will align with the bottom right corner of the preview.

**For most projects, it is easiest to use the Origin Point mode.**

#### Send your design to the cutter to begin cutting. If you need to stop the cut (especially if the vinyl bunches or gets stuck), press the "Stop" or "Pause" button on the computer.

## Overview

With LightBurn you can:

## How to use LightBurn at RCL-Laser-Computer

### Location

LightBurn application shortcut is located on the 'desktop' of RCL-Laser-Computer. Launching the application might give you a licencing error, which you can ignore. The application will function normally after you acknowledge the error.

## How to guide

1. Make yourself familiar with the machine controls in ["Getting Started"](#getting-started)
2. Make sure the laser is turned off
   1. No illuminated bed
   2. No lights on the beacon
   3. No Exhaust and Chiller sounds
3. Check the chiller lines are properly secured/fastened at the laser and the chiller itself
4. **A LASER GRADE EYE PROTECTION IS RECOMMENDED AT ALL TIMES WHEN OPERATING THE MACHINE.**\
   Contact one of our member in house if you don't have one.
5. <mark style="color:red;">**THIS CHECK IS MANDATORY BEFORE TURNING ON THE LASER**</mark>

   Open the laser door and check the laser nozzle and make sure the air-Inlet is positioned inwards a.k.a pointing towards the back of the laser like in the picture below.&#x20;

6. Close the laser door *and leave it closed.*
7. Using the key turn on the laser
8. Wait for the laser gantry to finish homing procedure and till it returns to previous origin.

   Gantry will move to x,y origin (top right corners), this will be a slow move, and then gantry moves fast back to the previous job's origin position.
9. Clear (if any) leftover material from the laser bed

   move the bed (bed moves down towards ground) or the gantry as needed using the remote or the control panel
10. Make sure the lenses and are mirrors are clean

    If not sure how, ask someone what to look for and how to clean each item.
11. Place your material on the bed

    Move the gantry as required and after placing your material on the bed you may use the wooden fasters to secure/tie-down your material in place.
12. Focusing the laser on the material

    Use the [focus-dingus](#focus-dingus) with the laser nozzle like in the picture to align the focus of the laser to the material surface\
    The gap between the material and the [focus-dingus](#focus-dingus) shall be very minimal a.k.a no more than what is takes to move the focus-dingus between the material and the laser head.\
    **If there exist large gap,  laser will not focused on the material and your cut/engrave result will not be as expected**
13. This section assumes you have your design's ready and are already [sent to SALaser's](/tools/lasers/lightburn#sending-files-to-the-machine) Control Panel

    Refer to [Lightburn](/tools/lasers/lightburn) section on our wiki for more info on how to use [LB](/tools/lasers/lightburn) with [SA Laser Razer-2](/tools/lasers/sa-laser-razor-2)
14. Align origin in design with actual laser head's origin position

    Depending on the origin settings on the LightBurn design, you may to adjust you gantry position to align with your desired laser head origin position.
15. Press the '[Laser button](#laser-button)" and get the chiller going first.
    1. This step helps the laser tube to get chilling process first before the laser stars firing
    2. Also help auditory that makes sure chiller is turned on before the laser is getting fired
16. Press the "[Exhaust button](#exhaust-button)" and start the exhaust
    1. This may start and loud noise, use hearing protection if needed.
17. Move the gantry to your desired position and hit origin on the [Remote Control](#remote-control) or the [Control Panel](#control-panel)
18. To confirm your origin position you may now choose to use the "[Test-fire Button](#test-fire-button)"

    Note: this will burn the material at the current position of the head with the power setting on the [Control Panel](#control-panel)
19. You may now use the "Frame Button" on the [Remote Control](#remote-control) or the [Control Panel](#control-panel) to see the gantry moving along the largest polygon area bounded by your design.

    If you wish to adjust your design in LightBurn you will have [to resend the design](/tools/lasers/lightburn#sending-files-to-the-machine)

    If you re-align your material repeat from step 17
20. Once you're comfortable with the power settings and the position of your material hit [start button](#start-button) on the [Control Panel](#control-panel)
21. Once the Job start or if you feel something is quite not right yet feel free to hit the [stop button](#stop-button) to stop your job on the [Control Panel](#control-panel) at any given point in time

## Exhaust

We use a [Zoom W4L](https://zoomblowers.com/w4l-750-watt-zoom-blower.html) bouncy house fan for the exhaust. It boasts an insane amount of CFM (around 1300) in a small and relatively quiet package.

What makes this fan great is that just about every part on this fan is user serviceable with replacement [parts available from the manufacturer](https://zoomblowers.com/air-blowers/res-inflatable-blowers)

Before you question this decision over the obvious static pressure concerns, this decision was based off a [reddit thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/lasercutting/comments/5f0wmn/on_extraction_fans/) which said these fans are engineered to work under static pressure (kids bouncing in a bouncy house) and will actually burn out if they don't have that pressure. So far the random internet engineer seems to be correct in his findings!

### Assembly

We used a [6" Ducting End Cap](https://www.lowes.com/pd/IMPERIAL-6-in-dia-Galvanized-Steel-Round-End-Cap/3711202) for the output. We removed the stock endcap of the fan, cut a similar diameter hold in the hvac endcap, then drilled 4 matching holes to mount the new cap in place of the original one.

We used a [7.5" to 6" airtight adhesive duct take off ](https://www.lowes.com/pd/IMPERIAL-7-5-in-x-3-25-in-Galvanized-Steel-Airtight-Adhesive-Duct-Take-Off/1000228293) to attach the input side of the fan. We then used a standard 6" to 4" reducer to match our existing exhaust piping.

Seal all mating surfaces with HVAC foil ducting tape to eliminate any air leaks

## **Operation**

1. Use a vector graphics program such as Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape to create the object that you want to cut. You may also use the Lightburn software on the RCL laser computer to create the object.
2. Turn on the System switch on the BFL. The laser will home in the upper right corner and then return to the last saved origin point. The control display will say “Continue to work after Powercut ?” Press ESC to dismiss.
3. Sign in to the RCL laser computer. Check the #laser-cutter slack channel description for the password.
4. Open the Lightburn application and import the file you created in step 1. You can also import picture objects. Lightburn supports the following file types: svg, ai, pdf, dxf, hpgl, lt, png, jpg, bmp.
5. Define layers and power, speed and type of cut for each layer using the Lightburn software. Make any adjustments needed to the file and save it as a .lbn file.
6. Set the Lightburn coordinate system to use “Current Position” and set the job origin to the lower right. **DO NOT** change the Device (machine) origin in Lightburn. This will always be the upper right for the BFL.
7. Click on the “Send” button to send your file to the BFL. Put in whatever name you want.
8. Go to the BFL. You will see the name and outline of the file you sent to the laser.
9. Place the material to be cut on the laser bed.
10. Use the arrow keys on the laser control to move the laser to the area on your material where you want to start the cut.
11. Press the Origin button.
12. Press the Box button. The laser will move to define the area of your cut.
13. If everything looks OK, close both of the lids. Turn on the Laser, Exhaust and Air switches.
14. Make sure the laser chiller is turned on.
15. Make sure the water valves to the laser are open.
16. Note the locations of the emergency stop button and fire extinguishers.
17. Press the Start button on the laser control to begin the cut.
18. STAY AT THE LASER until the cut is complete.
19. When the cut is complete, clear away any material from the laser bed.&#x20;
20. Turn the System, Laser, Exhaust and Air switches off. **DO NOT TURN OFF THE CHILLER.**
21. Clean the laser lens.


# Chiller

***Periodic Maintenance*** \
\
*- the air* inlet filters on the left and right side of the chiller need to be cleaned monthly or when they appear dirty. The radiator inside the chiller behind the rear air outlet exhaust fans must also be cleaned monthly. This can be accomplished by using the compressor to blow out the inside of the chiller.\
\
\- The coolant level needs to be checked weekly or before each use. There is a coolant level gauge on the back of the unit. It should be filled until the coolant level is in the GREEN zone of the gauge. Use distilled water or other approved coolants only.

There is a 10A 250V fast acting fuse inside the power socket on the back of the unit. There is a spare fuse in the socket as well.

<mark style="color:red;">**The drum sander is not a thickness planer! The drum sander is designed to remove very small amounts of material. NEVER remove more than 1/64" or a maximum of 1/32" of material in a single pass. If too much material is removed at one time the sanding belt on the drum will become clogged and the belt will be destroyed. Cleaning the belt is important. The BFV dust collector at River City Labs is a modified Harbor Freight 70 Gallon 2 HP Heavy Duty High Flow High Capacity Dust Collector based on plans from DIY Tyler. **Emptying the dust collection barrel**

<mark style="color:$danger;">**Please empty the dust collection barrel after each daily use of the dust collection system.**</mark>

**Cleaning the filter**\
The filter will need to be occasionally cleaned. To clean the filter use the air compressor to blow air through the outer metal mesh. Make sure to blow off the entire outer surface of the filter. Wait a few minutes for the dust to settle inside the filter and drop into the green bucket. Unscrew the green bucket in a clockwise direction to remove the bucket. Empty out the dust. Replace the bucket by screwing it in a counterclockwise direction. Do not over tighten the bucket.

# VCarve Pro Makerspace Edition

RCL owns a license of VCarve Pro Makerspace Edition. This license entitles RCL to install the full version of VCarve Pro on up to five computers at our facility. It also entitles members to a free copy of VCarve Pro Makerspace Edition Desktop Client to load on their computer. The desktop client allows you to have an almost fully working copy of VCarve Pro on your computer so you can work on your projects at home without having to come to the space. The only limitation of the desktop client is that it can not export your designs in a way that you can use on a CNC machine. To use your design you will need to come into the space and use one of the full copies of VCarve Pro to export your design and cut it on a CNC machine.

## Installing the Desktop Client

1. Install the free VCarve Pro Trial Edition from <https://www.vectric.com/free-trial/vcarve-pro>.&#x20;
2. Go to Help | About VCarve Pro Trial Edition and click on "Enter Makerspace ID"
3. Enter our Makerspace ID (provided later)
